We have been part of Volvo’s exclusive reveal of the fully electric Volvo EX90 in Stockholm, heralding a new era for Volvo Cars and are still impressed. The new flagship SUV, a seven-seater sets a statement in terms of safety and a sustainable lifestyle and underlines Volvo’s strategy of becoming a fully electric car maker by 2030 and its drive to achieve carbon neutrality by 2040. The Volvo EX90 is the saftest car the brand has ever produced. State-of-the-art sensors like cameras, radars and lidar are connected to the car’s high-performance core computers, whereas NVIDIA DRIVE runs the in-house software.

Volvo is introducing all-electric vehicles one year after the other until their entire lineup is environmentally friendly. They started with the XC40 Recharge, then launched the C40 and now the brand has introduced the Volvo EX90. At the event in Stockholm we already got a little glimpse that a smaller all-electric model will be coming very soon.

The exterior design of the Volvo EX90

The design

The Volvo EX90 expresses Scandinavian design at its best. Volvo’s designer show again, that practicality and safety doesn’t have to come at the price of aesthetics. The design is straightforward, involving sleek lines, subtle aerodynamic accents and innovative front and rear fasciae. Worth to mention are the redesigned headlamps that deliver a new spin on Volvo’s ‘Thor’s hammer‘ design. The headlamps now give the Volvo a kind of face, a sort of a blinking motion. Besides the Volvo EX90 has integrated a Luminar LiDAR system, implemented front and center in the roof line above the windshield. This will come as standard enabling enable advanced safety and autonomous capabilities on highways in the future.

Like the exterior design, the interior is kept very minimal. Exactly how we like it. Inside the car, you won’t find a lot of buttons or knobs. The Scandinavian roots are also reflected in here. Everything is very neatly arranged giving the interior an elegant look. The Volvo EX90 comes with a 14.5-inch center screen hosting the infotainment system. It is equipped with Google and 5G connectivity, alongside capabilities for wireless Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and over-the-air updates. Besides the Volvo EX90 is the first Volvo car to feature the Dolby Atmos sound via a 25 speaker system from Bowers and Wilkins. We can’t wait to experience the sound in here.

Materials

Let’s talk about the materials being used for the Volvo EX90. The Volvo C40 has been the first car to introduce a vegan interior only. And so does the Volvo EX90. As the brand has a strong focus on sustainability, carpets, seats and headliners come from recycled materials. The Nordico textile developed by Volvo is also applied in here. It comes from natural, bio-based, recycled sources. It is composed of organic materials from sustainable forests in Sweden and Finland, recycled corks from the wine industry and recycled PET bottles.

The Volvo EX90 contains about 15 percent of recycled steel, 25 percent of recycled aluminium and 48 kilogrammes of recycled plastics and biobased materials.

Performance and charging

The Volvo EX90 will have a range of up to 600 kilometres on a single charge (according to WLTP) and can be charged from 10 to 80 percent within 30 minutes. The twin motor allwheel drive version is powered by a 111kWh battery and two permanent magnet electric motors together delivering in its performance version 380 kW (517 hp) and 910 Nm of torque.

The Volvo EX90 is the first car that offers bidirectional charging. This means that you can use the car battery as an extra energy supply, for example to power your home or other electric devices.

With the Volvo EX90, the brand is making a great step into a sustainable future. We are highly impressed by the sleek design and of course Volvo’s approach towards the use of recycled and sustainable materials. We can’t wait to test drive the Volvo EX90 and of course, when the time has come, we will take you along.
